Backcountry report 5!!!

One day, precisely on 7th June, our correspondent came into our office with a broad smile on his face giving me a USB.
It was obvious that he enjoyed backcountry, because his face was well sunburned :D
This time he went to Mt. Tokachi-dake.

Mt. Tokachi-dake is located among several steep peaks in Daisetsuzan National Park.

Daisetsuzan is called "Kamuimintara" - "God's Playground" by the Ainu - the indigenous people of Hokkaido.

Some come here for  trekking, some come for boarding or skiing at this time of the year.

After this delightful day, he finally stored away his winter stuff in a closet.

Now he is addicted to pick edible wild plants in the mountains, and make processed food, like pickles.
Sometimes he joins flea markets to sell them. So if you come to Furano, you may have chance to taste the delicious mountain food :D

Today's events

Under a clear azure sky, there were two open-air events in Furano.
One was for classic car maniacs, "Classic car meeting in Furano".

The other was "Hokkaido FURANO EARTHRide 2011".

These photos were taken around the finish area.

There were three courses, 125 km, 85 km, and 55 km.

They might have felt a pleasant breeze in the countryside, seeing Japanese rose and ox-eye daisy, potato flowers which have just started to bloom :D

Flower report

These are photos of early lavender taken today by FTA at someone's house in Kitanomine.
The ears are already becoming purple!
These early ones will be at their best at the end of June :D

We can see them turning deep purple here and there before long.
Ciao :D

Trail running

Public announcements have been echoing in the Kitanomine zone since this morning.
Furano Trail Run 2011 http://furano-trail.net/ is held in Furano Ski Resort today!
Athletes obsessed with running in lush green mountains are now gathering from various places in Hokkaido.

The air feels good with a pleasant temperature around 20℃ :D

Flower report

We have balmy summer days this week.
The Furano's flower season has started.

These photos were taken on 16th June 2011 by FTA.

These purple flowers look like lavender but they are meadow sage :D

Green plants on this side of the photo are lavender. It will take a few more weeks to bloom.

Farmer's photo

Furano's farmers have spent busy period since early spring.
Sorry, this is a belated photo. It is taken on the 16th of May in an onion field at the foot of Furano Zone by a farmer.
All the runs of Furano Zone, such as Panorama, Technical, Spies, Sailer and Challenge can be seen in the backdrop.
Now these sprouts should have grown bigger and onions will be harvested at the end of summer.
If you are planning to come to Furano, September is one of the good months for coming, because you can enjoy tasting various kinds of Furano's agricultural  produce :D

Backcountry report 4!!!

It's June! Our correspondent enjoyed skiing in Sandanyama again on the 1st of June!!

It looks less snow around the bottom.

But still available for skiing from top to bottom.
This is the entrance of the run with Mt. Tokachidake.

The upper part is steeper than it looks. But enjoyable skiing is still available :D
